Renovations That Will Keep The Environment Happy As Well

It is important to appreciate the value of our surrounding environment and how we can make certain changes to our habits to ensure this is achieved.

It is a common trend amongst homeowners for them to want to renovate their homes from time to time. When such renovations take place, many of us do not look at the consequences that it may have on the environment surrounding us. Even if the renovation consist of small things such as changing your home lighting, we all need to give serious consideration about being green in our renovation process.

Don’t over do it

Many people when they adopt the policy of going green are known to take it to a next level. Your change in habits can not change the global energy problem however small changes can accumulate to do so in the long run. An expert company in green renovations highlighted certain ways that individuals like your self and I can simply adopt to ensure that we can all make some what of a difference. These include:

  1. Go for energy saving bulbs.
  2. Get your home tested for any air leaks especially when the central heating is on.
  3. Make sure your house is mould free.
  4. Get a computerised thermostat that will regulate the temperature of your house accordingly.
  5. Make sure all your water heaters are insulated to prevent any wastage of energy.
Don’t completely get rid of something that is old

I’m sure we have all come across the concept of carbon footprint and how it is increasing drastically in the world that we live in. This is the same concept when we throw something old out and buy something completely brand new. Without realising we are increasing the carbon footprint. Experts at green renovation have identified a way that one can reduce the carbon footprint that they produce. Instead of completely buying brand new items for your home, one should try and integrate their old items with new ones. This will help limit the amount of carbon footprint produced.

Go for suitable products

Green renovation groups have also focused on the importance of using certain types of products/material that also are friendly towards the environment. They suggest that instead of using the standard hardwood flooring, one should opt for sustainable material that is easily re-grown and that can be used for generations to come. Such materials would include things like cork and bamboo. Many people feel that these materials are not as durable as say hardwood however that is not the case. The only real difference that you may notice if any is the look that it may give, but one can always enhance something to look better with a few “magic” touches of their own.

VOCs are a definite no

VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds. These are the dangerous fumes that are released from various products that include paint, carpet, building material etc. Such fumes/gases are known to be very harmful for a human being and as expected quite harmful for the surrounding environment. For this reason it is important that we all try avoiding the use of such products.

Avoid waste

You do not want to contribute any waste to landfill sites as this will seriously destroy the environment that we live in. Unless you really have to dispose of something then do so, otherwise there are many stores across Canada that are willing to take them off your hands as a donation which can late be used for a more sustainable cause.

Try re-using

Even though you may want the latest, fanciest up to date furniture imported from abroad, this would not really be classed as being green. Instead of opting to buy brand new items it is a good idea to try and by used appliances in good condition.

Use your local resources

When looking for building materials and other equipment that you may need, don’t go to the other side of the city just to get some paint because it has a reputable name. Limit yourself to your local area as this will help the environment in more than one way.
